Patty & Gene Overbeck

Date of Passing
March 1, 2003
Patty and Gene Overbeck were partners in every sense; adventurous, accomplished, and deeply devoted to their family, friends, and community. Gene, a prominent aviation attorney, and Patty, a former flight attendant turned passionate historian and storyteller, shared a life filled with curiosity, service, and love. In 2003, their lives were cut short by accidental carbon monoxide poisoning in their new retirement home on Elk Lake in Northern Michigan. Their sudden and preventable deaths sent shockwaves through their community and ignited a powerful push for change. Their family turned her grief into action, spearheading efforts that led to the passage of the Overbeck Law in Michigan, which mandates CO detectors in all new homes (single-family dwellings and each unit of multi-family dwellings) for sale as well as boarding houses, hotels, and motels. Today, their legacy lives on through life-saving legislation and ongoing advocacy, protecting countless others from the silent danger that took them too soon.
